Todays is the 10th june 2013
and here will be the restoration of my new acquisition a Red mk1 1.6 eunos roadster
i can't wait to get stuck in and find what she needs to get her on the road and looking good.
a few pics on the day after purchase and before any work has commenced
11th june 2013
she has been sat around for just over 2 years as the tax run out in 05/2011 and she has taken a bit of rust onboard.
i can see a few parts will be needed straight away.
new front wing, door tops, set of 4 discs and pads, passenger mirror repair
and a good clean in and out including the bay as this is shockingly dirty.
looks like the cam cover may have a slight leak and maybe the cas sensor o ring has seen better days.
i will get her up on the ramp in the next day or so and see if the underside is ok,
this will be the make or break of the restore.
lets hope i find nothing nasty...

13/06/2013..
I managed to get lots done this afternoon as i had a few hours to spare so first up..
the car would almost stall if the throttle was blipped which meant the base idle was out and not equal to the ecu idle
so this was corrected .
Then on to cleaning the car starting with the engine bay
some before pics
some before pics
and After
not bad this may need a second wash in a few days just to get the rest of the muck out

Next up for a scrub is the hood
the hood is quite new but very dirty
pictures do not show how ingrained the dirt had become and also there was a line of glue on the front from where the new hood was fitted
you can see this in pic 2

After
this had 2 good scrubs with a hood cleaner and then 2 coats of sealer
to make it shine and waterproof it

ok on to the outside the paint on this 5 has some bad spotting
the red is lifting and it looks like someone painted their house white right next to it..
next job was strip the passenger mirror that was rolling around in the boot and rebuild it.
then refit it on the car.
next i cleared the rear rain drain holes behind the seat belts and the sill drain holes
both these tasks should be done every month for a healthy rust free car.
you can see how much water was holding in the sills and why it had sloshing noises.

good progress for just a few hours work car is clean looking good and running nice
if its not raining to hard tomorrow she will go up on the ramp for some underside inspections

no work today so i thought id get old red up on the ramp and have a poke around
I was quite surprised she only has the normal surface rust any 23 year old will have
a good wire brush and under seal will sort this out.

while she was up in the air i checked the discs pads and had a look for any leaks etc.
i also had a look at the sills and arches which we all now are a weak spot on a 5 and found the drivers side needed some tlc.
so out came the grinder and i cut out the rot.
then cleaned the insides out until i found solid metal
and gave it 3 coats of rust eater/sealer.

Next I cut and shaped a patch
(i'm getting better at these with everyone i do)
then held it in place with my trusty pc hard drive magnets while i tacked it in place,
then went around sealing it all up
ground down the weld and then filled the sill with cavity wax.
i would not normally drill and fill a hole like this as i'd go in through the door slam but i wanted to make sure the repair had a really good coat of sealer, when i'd put a good half a can in i rocked the car back and forth until the wax sealer ran out of the drain holes in the sill

While the wax dried i moved on to the passenger window whose cables had snapped.
now i only had a spare drivers side so i stripped that down and rebuilt the passenger one with the good cables

after putting the cover back on the winder motor i refitted the mech in the door and we now have a working window again.
back to the sill after a small amount of body filler to smooth it all out and plug fill my hole i made
i then gave it a few coats of stone chip paint to finish her of and protect the sill
i started to do along the back sill and under the car but ran out of paint, next time she is up in the air i will coat it all.

22/06/2013.
time to remove the rusty passenger wing and weld in some clean metal.
i have struggled to find a tidy clean rust free wing for a decent price
so i thought i'd remove the old one as it needs to come of anyhow and see if a repair could be made.
as you can see the wing came off ok however every bolt snapped so i have to drill and tap them all
the rot in the wing was quite extreme.
from the pics you can also see the wing to bumper bracket with both snapped bolts these i ground down drilled and replaced the bolts.
then flappy disced the wing back to clean bare metal
I then cheated slightly as the metal on the wing is very thin i welded a plate on the back and then filled the front with good quality body filler
3 coats of black stone guard on the rear 3 coats of primer and 3 coats of red topcoat
this will be rubbed back with 3000 grit wet and dry to even out the paint (rattle cans don't you know)
and then polished to a nice shine before fitting hopefully tomorrow.
Ok so i have now sanded back the paint with 3000 wet and dry cleaned the residue from the wing and fitted it back on the car using new bolts dipped in copper grease (just in case it needs coming off again)
Then i gave it a good polish with my buffer and some autoglym super resin polish problem is the wing is now the best panel on the car i think i may have to spray the rest.
24/06/2013
wheels are next so rub down sand out most of the curbing and give them a few coats of silver paint

Today is D Day for old red i have dropped her at Eddies ( my mot guy) for him to fail her
i know she will fail as she needs a track rod end pads and wiper blades
but i'd rather find out if there is any other nasties before i spend any more cash on her.
fingers crossed there is nothing else, and i can fix the things listed above for a 12 month ticket.
-----
Ok she is back home and has failed (as i knew she would)
but failed on...
front coil spring has snapped ( at the top)
all 4 ball joint dust boots are ripped so need replacing
the fog light switch is faulty.
and the track rod ends and wipers as stated
a few advisories about pads and brake pipes which i will address tomorrow
but all in all very good.
--------------------------------
29/06/2013
mot fail fixing time
so up on the lift and all 4 wheels of both front shock/spring out and both lower and upper ball joints removed also both track rod ends undone.
as it was only the dust boots that needed replacing all 3 on each side were done this was the recommendation of the mot tester as the all the ball joints are working fine and doing their job.
then both front springs were replaced for 30mm lowering ones (the rear set had been done previously)
and both fronts again like the passenger mirror were rolling around in the boot
(so it would have been rude not to fit them)
new brake pads front and rear also service and clean up all the calipers.
discs have surface rust and the mot man assured me that they are fine she will just need some miles under her belt to bed them in.
wire brush and a good coat of under seal in and around each corner.
both wiper blades replaced with new
And finally fitting of the newly cleaned and sprayed wheels with new nuts and locking nuts
now she is starting to looks nice
AND HAS A FULL 12 MONTH MOT
30/06/2013
Today i fixed the boot popper so it now opens the boot at a press of a button,
replaced the 3 blown fuses.
reconnected the wires to the ciggy lighter so that now works
swapped the fog light switch with one that had a working led tell tail light
replaced all the missing plastic scrivits that hold the carpets in/down and on in the cabin and the boot
sorted out the birds nest of wires where the radio should live connecting back to the cars loom
and then fitted a nice sony cd player over
the best fitting cubby hole i've ever had/fitted in a mk1 mx5.
removed the horrid wires going to the door speakers that just hung down from the dash up in to the speaker pods and threaded them through the rubber piping in to the door as the factory did
replaced the bad small, tinny cheap speakers in the doors for some grown up sized bassier ones
and then scrubbed the inside of the cabin and the boot space
she is also sitting nice today now the springs i fitted yesterday have settled
04/07/2013
last things to do are the door top rubbers and remove the horrid droopy hood lining.
when i removed the head lining i found the hood was not fitted correctly and some of the old hood was left in the roof rails.
so the next 3 hours was spent removing and refitting most of it to get it to fit and work well
and the new door rubbers are great
